2018 SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference

The Wisconsin Association of SkillsUSA held their annual State Leadership and Skills Conference this week. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry workers coming together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. The conference took place in Madison, Wisconsin on Tuesday, April 24th and Wednesday, April 25th at the Alliant Energy Center.

The conference highlights the many talents of high school and technical school students from across the state of Wisconsin.  Those who qualify in their local communities advance to the state competition, and those who win their category in Madison advance to the SkillsUSA National competition to represent the state of Wisconsin. The 2018 conference featured more than 1,600 students, 200 teachers, and over 300 industry volunteers.  The conference included more than 75 individual trade-related competitions.

Lakeside International Trucks, along with 25 other truck industry business professionals and technical experts, volunteer each year to help host the Diesel Competition. This year’s event was no different. The set-up crew comprised of sales professionals, engineers, product experts, service managers and business owners.  The trucks began to roll into the Alliant Energy Center by 7:00 a.m. the day before the competition and volunteers spent the day setting up equipment and tooling, running power.  In all, 23-stations were set up for the 21-contestants competing in the diesel contest this year.

“So many of the same volunteers from the industry return each year making the set up and running the competition nearly seamless,” said Rob Durham, SkillsUSA Diesel Competition Technical Chair. “This is a group of people that give up one to two days of their work week to support these talented students,” he said. In the marketplace they may be competitors, but for two days out of the year, they all come together with one mission. “The goal is to inspire and encourage these students to continue down the path of becoming a commercial truck diesel technician.  A competition like this provides the kids with exposure to industry professionals and serves as a great foundation for a long future in the diesel field,” said Durham.

“As a Service Manager, I appreciate when young people have an interest in our field of work,” stated Jeff Taylor, Lakeside-Madison Service Manager. Taylor, a former diesel technician himself, serves as a judge for the Brakes portion of the competition.  “As each student rotates through the station, I have an opportunity to meet with each of them for about 20-minutes. I enjoy this time because they’re so eager to win and they all want to be the best. They work hard and by the end of the 8-hour day they are fried, and understandably so!” said Taylor.

This year students from the Madison Area Technical College Diesel program placed in 1st and 2nd.  3rd place was awarded to a student from the Chippewa Valley Technical College Diesel program. The first-place winner will move onto SkillsUSA Nationals, held in Louisville, Kentucky during the week of June 25th.  Congratulations to these dedicated students!

Aside from the Diesel competition, there is a wide array of competition categories including Architectural Drafting/CAD, Automotive Service Technology, Cabinetmaking, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Masonry, Robotics and Automation, Welding, Woodworking and dozens more. “There is a significant need for everyone to support and promote the skilled trades, our nation needs experts,” said Taylor. “There’s nothing better than pumping up the students, thanking them for their interest in diesel work and working alongside other truck industry professionals to encourage and promote diesel jobs and our truck industry,” Durham added.
